How budget cuts and the economy may affect your students

It is amazing how budget cuts being made elsewhere can affect teachers and their students. For example, the recent 31 percent budget cut for public libraries in Ohio will force many of the public libraries to close or run part-time, and as we have already determined, that is the only source of computer and Internet for some students. Cuts have been made in funding for the arts across the nation, and some community centers and art communities will shut down. These are places many children are involved in, leaving them nowhere to find these resources for activities. If students were heavily involved in plays at the local art center, they will miss that part of their life, and it may show in their grades.

With the downfall of the economy and job losses so high, many families are being forced to move, sometimes more than once, which will create a high fluctuation in the number of students changing schools. Teachers will see students come and go, and students will feel the loss of their friends moving away. All this affects kids and how they perform in their academic studies. Many people do not realize the effect budget cuts have, and will have, on teachers and their students, and what the short- and long-term consequences might be.

As an effective teacher, it will be up to you to pay close attention to such happenings, changes in your students, and the possible consequences that could come with these changes. If you see a student going down the wrong road, perhaps stealing from other students, will you be able to intervene and help him or her find the right path back? Students have always needed effective teachers, and now they will need them more than ever. More budget cuts are inevitable, meaning there will be more demands on teachers to help their students maintain a good attitude, and effective teachers will have more to watch for in concern for their students’ well-being.

Now that you have a better idea of what to expect from the demands of your job, it is a good idea to consider ways to make your job easier to handle.
